West Ham Legend – Proper old school footballer
Julian Dicks spent two spells at West Ham, playing for the Club for ten years before finally saying goodbye to the pitch in 1999. Save for a season with Liverpool, Dicks was a consistent figure in the Irons’ line-up, so much so that he’s in the top 30 players when it comes to West Ham appearances.
The..Terminator featured in 326 matches for West Ham, putting him level with Tony Cottee. Only 27 other legends have played more times for the club, including Billy Bonds, Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking and current captain Mark Noble..!!
Despite being a defender Dicks netted 65 goals in all competitions for West Ham across his career, putting him in 17th in the Club’s all time top-scorers chart.
A disciplinary nightmare..
“I wasn’t dirty – I never went out to hurt anybody,” he says. “I just wanted to win.” – In fact, Dicks penchant for picking up red cards was such that West Ham manager Billy Bonds took the captaincy off him. “I always used to fall out with Billy but I understand why he didn’t want his captain to keep getting sent off,” he said. “Even though I once said to him, ‘It’s a bit hypocritical coming from you’.”
*Speaking in an interview in 2015, when asked about the sort of players he wanted to see at West Ham, Dicks responded:
“I just want players here who are passionate about the club and about the shirt that they wear. They don’t have to go around kissing it every five minutes but go out there and give everything he can. The least any footballer can do is give 100% every single game.”
