On this day in 2006 West Ham beat Arsenal 1-0 at Upton Park as Marlon Harewood’s dramatic late winner gave us a second successive victory in a match which also produced our first clean sheet of the season.
West Ham’s starting XI: Green, Spector, Ferdinand (McCartney 44), Gabbidon, Konchesky, Benayoun, Bowyer (Sheringham 62), Mullins, Reo-Coker, Etherington, Zamora (Harewood 62).
Subs Not Used: Carroll, Tevez.
“I had a game plan,” said Pardew. “Sometimes you set up a format and a contingency plan and it goes completely astray. But today it worked for us. Nigel had a brief to ensure Cesc Fábregas didn’t play his part and Bobby Zamora worked so hard for us today. It was a big platform so Teddy [Sheringham] and Marlon could come on and grab the headlines.”
Pardew vs Wenger
Pardew celebrated in true last-minute-winner style, leaping into the arms of his management team. But Wenger took exception and the pair confronted each other, with the Arsenal boss appearing to push Pardew before they were pulled apart. Wenger then appeared to refuse to shake Pardew’s hand after the final whistle.
