It was recently reported that David Moyes could seek to sign a new right-back with Ryan Fredericks injured and Liverpool’s forgotten defender Nathaniel Clyne is believed to be an option for West Ham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-striker admitted that he thought Clyne hadn’t hit the heights he should have at Anfield but still thought the Hammers could use him.
When asked if West Ham and Clyne feel like a match made in heaven due to both of their current situations, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, look Nathaniel Clyne was fantastic when he was at Southampton.
“He did okay at Liverpool, not hit the heights he should have done, but you know there’s a player in him.
“He’s been hampered with injuries, but yeah this seems the perfect match for player and club if he can stay fit and get himself right.
“Moyes could have a really good player on his hands, and with Fredericks and Clyne there, two fantastic players and good options.”
